Smart Data Compression

Smart Data Compression is a compressed GIS data format, the files have the file extension sdc. In sdc files all types of feature and attribute data are stored together. It was developed by ESRI for their ArcGIS package. The SDC format used by ESRI ArcGIS StreetMap for the products, ArcIMS Route Server, route map IMS, ArcGIS Business Analyst and ArcMobile SDK.

The compression ratio ranges from 8 -fold to 20 -fold reduction of the original data set. ESRI uses this format, for example, to make free data on its website accessible and to ensure rapid accessibility on the Internet.
