SmartDrive

Smart Drive is a program that 4.01 part of MS -DOS was and was with Windows 3.x used to the last version 6.22 for the speed optimization by caching in memory. Due to the buffering of frequently used data in memory, the data throughput of hard drives has been increased significantly.

In the early MS- DOS versions of SmartDrive has been started by calling the device driver in the CONFIG.SYS SMARTDRV.SYS, in later versions this was replaced by the executable SMARTDRV.EXE, which was indeed loaded via CONFIG.SYS, could be called but also about the AUTOEXEC.BAT or from the command prompt.
