SmartOS

SmartOS is an open source operating system based on Illumos, which is designed to operate in the data center. The main task is the execution of the virtual machine, not the independent execution of applications. It links the ZFS file system, the system DTrace tool, the concept of "zones" and a Linux-based Kernel-based Virtual Machine, KVM shortly. SmartOS is developed by Joyent.

Technology

ZFS

With ZFS you can quickly create system files or zones and there is data integrity guarantees. It is a copy- on-write system, whereby at any time taken snapshots of the system and these can also be cloned.

DTrace

With DTrace, a system developed by Sun Microsystems system tool offers the possibility to the file system, memory, retrieve running processes, and other resources of the system.

Zones

One of the basic technologies of SmartOS are "zones". A zone is a virtual instance of the operating system, such as a private system behaves, even if they are running on the same computer among other areas. All zones of the system will share resources as the single processor core. A zone is similar to a virtual machine, but the main difference is that the zones share a core, while each virtual machine runs on its own processor core. Each process has its own zone ID.

KVM

A Kernel-based Virtual Machine is a Linux-based virtualization structure.
