Achievements

Smbat Lputjan won in 1978 and 1980, the Championship of the Armenian SSR. In 1982 he received the title of International Master in 1984 and Grand Master. He won in his career several international tournaments: Berlin 1982, Athens 1983, Irkutsk 1983, Sarajevo 1985, Irkutsk, 1986, Hastings 1986/87 ( shared with Murray Chandler, Jonathan Speelman and Bent Larsen ), Dortmund 1988, Yerevan, 1988, 1988 Blagoveshchensk, Uzhgorod, 1988, Altensteig 1989 Rimavska Sobota, 1991, Dortmund Open 1992 ( together with Vladimir Kramnik and Zurab Asmaiparaschwili ), Yerevan 1996 ( shared with Predrag Nikolić ), New York 1998, Wijk aan Zee B 1999, Yerevan 2000 ( zone Tournament ) and 2001 ( Armenian Championship), Port Erin 2003 ( shared with Simen Agdestein ). In 1984, he first participated at the USSR championship, where he finished fifth.

In 1990 he qualified by a split victory ( with Alexei Shirov, Alexei Drejew and Leonid Judassin ) the zone tournament in Lviv for the Interzonal in Manila. In 1993 he won the zone tournament in Protwino and then participated in the Interzonal in Biel part.

In 2006, he celebrated one of its greatest successes when he won the Chess Olympiad in Turin with Armenia. Overall, he played from the Chess Olympiad 1992 in Manila eight times for Armenia at Chess Olympiads. 1992, 2002 and 2004 won bronze Armenia. He received in 1992 for his individual score of board 3, a silver medal.

His Elo rating is 2574 (as of July 2011), so that it is ranked 11 of the Armenian Ranking and place 346 in the world rankings. His previous highest Elo rating was 2640 in January 2005.

Smbat Lputjan is Vice President of the Armenian Chess Federation. 2004, the title FIDE Senior Trainer, he was awarded.
