Smiley Smile is a music album by the American group The Beach Boys. It was released on September 11, 1967. The album was produced by the Beach Boys.
Genesis
After the highly acclaimed Pet Sounds album, Brian Wilson rushed to the work on the planned successor Smile. The first song for the album, which he wrote with Mike Love, was Good Vibrations. To add this song needed the Beach Boys six months. They worked in four different studios, as Brian Wilson was of the opinion that each studio had its own sound. The Smile project should be published as a concept album. Brian Wilson worked closely with Van Dyke Parks, whom he had committed as a copywriter for this album. Parks brought Wilson away from themes of love and romance, towards free word associations. Wilson and Parks wrote many songs for the Smile album. The album was announced for December 1966. Wilson, already known previously as a perfectionist, always worked on parts of the album, but did not find a thread. The album was initially not be completed and was long regarded as the "biggest lost album in rock history ." Under the title of Brian Wilson presents Smile Wilson published in 2004 a version of the planned album.
Brian Wilson lost by the burst shooting his self-confidence and creativity. In addition there were more psychological problems that affected the relations with the rest of the Beach Boys. Problems from outside reinforced Wilson's condition. The record company, Capitol Records was in dispute with the Beach Boys. Capitol wanted to extend the expiring contract with the Beach Boys necessarily the Beach Boys called for a payment of outstanding royalties. When the dispute was finally settled in the summer of 1967, was Brian Wilson's will to bring the Smile project to end, broken. At the same time came the Beatles album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Brian Wilson Smile wanted to publish before Revolver successor. The publication of the esteemed by many as the best pop album of all time album was Brian Wilson's ambitions the rest Wilson later claimed that he had burnt all the master tapes of Smile, but I repeatedly came up fragments of the album. 2011 appeared the whole album under the title The Smile Sessions. In October 1967, a greatly shortened version of Smile was released with Smiley Smile, enriched with some newly written and improvised home studio titles. Smiley Smile was the first album that was at least not officially produced by Brian Wilson, but by the entire group as a unit. Brian Wilson did not want to take responsibility for the recording process. However, the arrangements are still mainly Brian Wilson's work.
The album peaked in the U.S. Billboard Charts Platz 40, making it the worst -placed Beach Boys album at this time. In England it reached at least 9th place

Vegetables contains as a special gimmick percussion elements which have been produced by biting into raw vegetables. Paul McCartney was in some shots here and nibbled on carrots. This contribution, however, was not used for the released version.
She's Going Bald includes singing of the Beach Boys who sounds as if they had inhaled helium. The effect was produced by faster playback of the recording tape.
