Smirnykh

Smirnych (Russian Смирных ) is an urban-type settlement in Sakhalin Oblast (Russia) with 7399 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in the central part of the island of Sakhalin, in the wide valley that forms the river Poronai between Western and Eastern part of the Sachalingebirges. It is taking away about 70 kilometers from the coast of the Okhotsk Sea, the Bay Terpenije at Poronaisk. By Smirnych the Orlowka that opens ten kilometers east in the Poronai flows.

Smirnych 1965 its administrative center since the founding of the eponymous Rajons Smirnych on January 16. The village is located some 350 km ( straight line ) north of the Oblasthauptstadt Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

History

While the membership of the southern part of the island of Sakhalin to Japan from 1905 existed at the site of the present Smirnych district ketone (Japanese気 屯) the city Shikuka (now Poronaisk ). As a result of the Second World War came the southern part of Sakhalin to the Soviet Union, and the place was in 1947 its present name in honor of the 1945 in the fighting around the area who lost their lives battalion commander of the Red Army Captain Leonid Smirnych (a village of Rajons received by its name which also fallen there sergeant Anton Bujukly, both were also appointed to heroes of the Soviet Union).

Economy and infrastructure

The settlement is situated on the main route leading to the Nogliki of the narrow-gauge railway network ( Cape gauge 1067 mm) of the Sakhalin Island ( 411 km distance from Korsakov on Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk; station name Smirnych - Sachalinski ).
