Şəmkir
Şəmkir, also Shamkir or Semxir until 1938 Anne Field, is a city in Azerbaijan. It is the capital of the district Şəmkir. In the city of 2008 there were over 37,700 inhabitants.
History
Near the town are the ruins of the ancient city and fortress Şəmkir, after the new town was named. The old city was destroyed by the Mongols. Later it founded the city Annenfeld German settlers. The settlers were displaced in the 1930s by political repression and after the German attack against the Soviet Union in 1941 and renamed the city in Şəmkir. Today only Azerbaijanis live in Şəmkir.
Culture
In the city there is a historical museum, a mosque and a cinema.
In Şəmkir is a garrison. There units of the Azerbaijani Army are stationed.
Traffic
The city is connected to the national bus network. There are two railway stations of the Azerbaijan Railway near Dallas and Şəmkir.
