Smokebox

Smoke chamber is called the foremost part of the boiler of a steam locomotive on the the chimney is located. In the smoke chamber, the required for the suction of the combustion air pressure is generated by emerging from the cylinders, the exhaust steam is led through a blower pipe which is arranged below the stack in the smoke chamber. Next gather in the smoke chamber entrained by the flue gases, unburned fuel components, the Delete.

Design features

The smoke chamber consists essentially of a cylindrical shell, which is connected via a profile ring with the front boiler barrel and an annular wall door with the smoke box door. The smoke chamber is riveted to the tread ring or, in modern vessels, is welded.

Under the chimney of the blowpipe head is arranged which is adjusted such that the emerging conical beam vapor fills the cross-section of the stack closely. This results in the smoke chamber, a vacuum, which continues through the boiler tubes to the firebox and there stoking the furnace. Thus, the vacuum can form in the smoke chamber, it is important that the smoke box door airtight and includes all pipe penetrations are sealed in the smoke chamber. The flat-ground door is therefore pressed with sash locks on the door wall and usually sealed with a central locking system.

So the fire is kindled in stand or when driving with the throttle is closed, is located in the smoke chamber and the auxiliary blowers, which is arranged in a ring around the mouth blowpipe and with a small amount of extracted steam boiler, stoking the fire.

Under the chimney of the spark arrester is arranged, which should prevent that burning pieces of fuel leaving the chimney. The entrained by the flue gases parts collect at the bottom of the smoke chamber and must be quenched from time to time by a transverse mounted in the smoke chamber spray tube with water, which is why they are also called Delete. The smoke chamber bottom is lined to protect against overheating ( annealing ) and severe corrosion of refractory concrete. For the end of the spray water on smoke chamber base a drain connection, which has to be screwed during operation with a union nut. The smoke box door is inside, protected with an easily removable protective sheet, the smoke chamber door saver.

For superheated steam locomotives the smoke chamber is also housed the steam header box. The steam passes from the steam dome in the vapor collection box and where it enters the flange-mounted on the collecting box installed in the flue tubes superheater elements. With newer steam locomotives also the hot steam controller is in the vapor collection box.

In a niche in front of the chimney a Oberflächenvorwärmer or the mixing box Mischvorwärmeranlage is usually housed.
