Pseudocyttus maculatus

Pseudocyttus maculatus is a marine fish of the order of Peter Fishy ( Zeiformes ). It is found mainly in the southern hemisphere of the earth. Sites in the South Atlantic, the coasts of Uruguay, Argentina, the Falkland Islands and the coasts of Namibia and South Africa, as well as the Antarctic Bellingshausen Sea. In the southern Pacific fish was detected on the coast of southern Chile, in New Zealand, Tasmania and New South Wales, in the Indian Ocean at the Kerguelen.

Features

Pseudocyttus maculatus is a maximum of 68 inches long and five kilograms, but is usually at a length of 40 centimeters. The long-lived fish can reach an age of 100 years. They have high backs and sides strongly flattened. Juveniles are silvery with numerous dark spots of different sizes. The spots expand with increasing age and displace the silvery color. Adult fish are chocolate brown in color with darker fins. The dorsal fin is supported by five to seven spines and 33 to 36 soft rays. The anal fin has two to three spines and 31 to 34 soft rays.

Way of life

Grown Pseudocyttus maculatus live on the sea floor at the edges of continental shelves at depths from 400 to 1500, mostly between 900 and 1100 meters. They feed mainly on salps. The fish do not vertical migrations. The pelagic eggs and larvae drift near the sea surface. Even young fish live near the water surface, usually near krill swarms.

Use

The fish are fished commercially and used in German-speaking countries under the trade name New Zealand John Dory on the market.
