Smoothing plane

The double planer is a wooden hand plane. From the producing surface finish of the third processing step is performed with the double planer.

The planer order is:

• Scrub plane (round narrow blade ),
• Smoothing Plane (single blade 48 mm wide),
• Double planer (straight blade 48 mm with chip breaker / flap ), the Jack Plane is equated with the double planer, but the Jack Plane is taken at long boards. All the blades have a cutting angle of 45 °.
• Smoothing plane with the last planing transition is performed.

Special

The double planer itself is like all other cutters from a beech body and a hornbeam sole, the sole can also be made of lignum vitae with particular aesthetic. In contrast to the double smoothing plane planer the plane iron is fitted with a flap, also called a chip breaker provided. The chip breaker has the task of the removed chip about 1 mm behind the cutting edge to "break", so tearing before cutting to maintain a clean surface quality is prevented.

Use

Even today, the double planer is often used, but it is still used in rare cases to the planing of wooden boards. He is still part of the standard equipment of every carpenter on the mounting. It is used for example in the construction joinery, instead of a sanding block for "breaking" of cut edges.
