Smyril Line

Smyril Line is a shipping company in Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. It operates the ferry service between Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Denmark.

History

In 1982, the ferry Smyril Line was founded with the aim to connect countries and island states in the North Atlantic with each other and thus to improve the connectivity of the Faroe Islands to the international transport networks. The Smyril Line thus builds on the ferry services of the state " Strandfaraskip Landsins " that covers the innerfäröischen ferry traffic, among other things with their flagship smyril. " Smyril " is the Faroese name for the Merlin, the only native bird of prey in the Faroe Islands. Despite the common name using the ship smyril and Smyril Line have no connection with each other.

The Smyril Line is headquartered in Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands and has additional shipping company own booking offices in the Danish Hanstholm, in Reykjavik in Iceland as well as in Kiel, Germany. Furthermore, there are general agencies of Smyril Line and Others in Sweden, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, France and Italy.

First Smyril Line bought the Swedish ferry Gustav Vasa, which was used up to that point on the line Malmö -Travemünde. With the renamed Norröna ferry initially was offered only in the months of April to September the ferry service, from the end of 1998 all year round. In the summer months, when the Norröna was utilized by the ferry, a Ro-Ro ship was chartered in addition.

In 1998, the cargo division was founded under the name Smyril Line Cargo. The old ship Norröna I was used for the line - Hanstholm Tórshavn The new building of the ferry. The loading capacity is 13,000 tons of goods per week. Since the beginning of October 2010, the Smyril Line Hirtshals connects twice weekly with Tórshavn and in summer also with Seydisfjörður to Iceland. The freight division is headquartered also in Tórshavn. Smyril Line Cargo has offices in Denmark in Hanstholm, Kolding and Hedehusene, also there is a representative office in Seydisfjörður.

Other business services are the Smyril Line for seismographic measurements around the Faroe Islands, the operation of hotels and hostels in the Faroe Islands and participation as a founding member of the Faroese oil company Atlantic Petroleum.

Norröna

The Norröna Ferry offers year-round service between Denmark and the Faroes on, during the period April to October Iceland will also be run once a week.

During inclement weather, the Danish ports Esbjerg and Frederikshavn and Klaksvík serve in the Faroe Islands as an alternate ports.
