SN 1885A

SN 1885A was a supernova that shone in the Andromeda Galaxy in 1885. SN 1885A reached a brightness of 6 mag. She received the variable star designation S Andromedae. SN 1885A was the first and so far only supernova that was discovered in the Andromeda galaxy, and also the first observed extragalactic supernova.

The supernova was on 19 August 1885 by Isaac Ward, an Irish amateur astronomers in Belfast, and, independently, on August 20, 1885 by Ernst Hartwig at the observatory of Dorpat (now Tartu Observatoorium ) discovered.

The remnant of SN 1885A was found on 10 November 1989 by RA Fesen 4m Mayall telescope at the Kitt Peak Observatory.
