Snaefell on the Isle of Man

F

The Snaefell ( [ snɛɪfɛl ], Old Norse "Snow Mountain", Manx: Sniaull ) is 621 m, the highest mountain in the Isle of Man and the only mountain over 600 meters on the island. It is located near Laxey, north of the island's capital, Douglas.

An old legend says that one can see six kingdoms of the island on a clear day: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man and the sky. Other versions add the realm of Neptune.

The Snaefell Mountain Railway runs since 1896 from Laxey to the summit. There is a café and various communication masts. The A18 Snaefell Mountain Road leads over the Snaefell.

The mountain is named after the Snaefell Mountain Course, the motorsport race track, among other things, since 1911 the Isle of Man TT motorcycle races will be held.
