So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish

Take care and thanks for the fish ( So Long, and Thanks For All the Fish ) is the title of the fourth volume of the six -part novel series The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The novel was published in 1984 in the original, the German translation in 1985.

In the first Hitchhiker 's novel the dolphins leave the misinterpreted by humans message, "Take care and thanks for the fish " as they move away from Earth just before it is destroyed by the Vogons to make way for a hyperspace bypass road space. The phrase has since also used by science fiction fans as humorous variant, to say goodbye.

The action takes place some time after the third part ( The life, the universe and all the rest ) and provides the transition to the fifth part of the series: Mostly Harmless.

Arthurdent returns to actually explode ground to find out whether it is still the same as before. It is she, but the dolphins are gone. For Arthur found in his house a mysterious glass vessel on which are engraved the words: " Take care and thank you."

Together they embark on a search for the answer to the riddle why the dolphins are gone. This leads to the " outside of the madhouse ", a house whose builder John Watson called " Wonko the intellectual part ," the world wants to have recognized as asylum, and has therefore built a madhouse for the whole world. Only he and his living area are on the, outside '.

Ford Prefect also makes his way to Earth after his article about the earth suddenly appear in full in the pickup, although he had in view the destruction expected the exact opposite.

Arthur and Fenchurch eventually make their way to Preliumtarn where God's final message is to the creation. There they meet Marvin, the depressed robot, which is now by previous events 37 times older than the universe and is on the verge of dying.

The story of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was originally planned as a trilogy. Due to the great success Adams wrote successively two more volumes, which is why the series is also known as " Four-part trilogy in five volumes " or the last band as " Fifth part of a trilogy ."

Title: power 's or Mach 's

Some German editions is the title " Take care and thanks for the fish ", he is thus formulated as singular. Since the message of the dolphins, however, directed to humanity and not to a single person, this translation is wrong. It is probably "only" an error in the cover design. " So long and thanks for all the fish " appears only on the cover, the book itself, the book title is " So Long, and Thanks for the fish ".
