Sobor

Sobor or Sabor ( German: meeting ) is a Slavic term for a council, ie a gathering of church dignitaries. Today we distinguish between a ( Bishop ) Synod (Russian архиерейский собор ), and a local council (Russian поместный собор ), where not only bishops but also other church dignitaries and legal representatives are present. The name derives from the Slavic word for church meeting.

The first Sobor of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1051 was held in Kiev. The Ukrainian Catholic Church held after its establishment in 1596 regular meetings. For the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in particular was the Sobor of 1640 under the Metropolitan Petro Mohyla of importance, which was attended by numerous church laity.
