Social Security card
The social security card is a document that confirms its owner as a member of the statutory social security system.

General
Each insured employee has a social security card, which is issued by the competent institution ( § 18h SGB IV). In taking up a job this is presented at the request of the employer. Frequently, however, this indication of the pension insurance number is already sufficient. The design of the social security card sets the German Federal Pension Insurance in certain principles that are to be approved by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and published in the Federal Gazette ( for the period from 1 January 2011 see BAnz 2011, p 205-211 (SGB 4 § 18h Anl1 ) ). The principles provide that the data referred to in § 2 SGB 18h para 4 will be announced exclusively in the form of a cover letter, which shall be considered as social security card. It is a parked on the respective case letter is used, which is based on the exhibition ground of the social security card. Specifically, these are:
- Assignment of a social security number (particularly in initial employment )
- Name Change
- Reissue ( social security card is destroyed, lost or become unusable )
Workers who were sent by their employers from abroad to Germany must apply for a public health insurance of their choice, the issue of a replacement certificate and they are carrying. If you lose your social security card that can be requested by the employer or the insurance company.
If lost, a new social security card must be applied for at the competent pension insurance. This is required even if the card destroyed or has become unusable. The damaged passport must be returned in reissue. Each employee may only have a social security card ( § 18h Abs.4 p.3 SGB IV).
Content of the document
The social security card contains the following data:
- The pension insurance number of the owner
- The family name and maiden name (and possibly academic titles )
- First name
Other personal data must not contain the identity. In addition, the term " social security card ", the name of the issuing pension institution and a continuous form number is printed.
Obligation to refer the employee
The employee is obliged to inform the employer submit the social security card at the beginning of employment or the subsequent immediately upon receipt later. Furthermore, the intake point of the loss or the retrieval is reported immediately.
Obligations of the employer
The employer must provide leave of his employees to the social security card at the start of employment. A carrying requirement no longer exists since 1 January 2009. Instead, the employees of some industries are required to carry their identity card, passport, passport replacement or substitute identity ( § 2a paragraph 1 SchwarzArbG ).
Austria
The e-card is made in Austria by the social security available, and it includes the social security number. It is therefore the current social security card (as of the beginning of 2006 ).

GDR
The social security card of the GDR ( German Democratic Republic ) was a book in which all insurable employment were registered. Furthermore, were inscribed in it any absence from work (so-called lost work days). The social security card was the most important " evidence " of the insured against the East German pension insurance.
In addition, he served as proof to have health insurance and was present at each visit. The ID ( short: SV- ID) has been issued in the initial take up employment or training.
For the period between birth and initial start work there was the " social security and certificate of vaccination for children and adolescents ". This was also bound in book form with solid cardboard cover (but in red instead of green) and had 48 pages. These were used only for documentation of vaccination, diseases and treatments. The forms on the sides were aligned according to the needs of children and adolescents.
