In April 1941, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia joined the Second World War, when it was attacked on the 6th day of the month by all sides during the Balkan campaign. After the German army conquered the entire country, Yugoslavia was divided by the Axis powers in several fascist vassal states. Bulgaria was divided on 19 April Vardar Macedonia on its state structure and the outermost western Macedonia between Struga and Tetovo came to fascist Greater Albania. The Bulgarians met with no great resistance and were sometimes even welcome.

This date is now celebrated as a national holiday in Macedonia.
