Société Nationale d'électricité du Burkina Faso

The Société Nationale d' Electricité du Burkina, commonly known by the abbreviation SONABEL, is the State Electricity Company of the West African state of Burkina Faso.

History

The SONABEL goes back to 1954, founded, owned energy Afrique Occidentale Française de l' ( AOF ). It was converted into a public limited company under burkinischem law and renamed Société d' Electricité Voltaïque ( VOLTELEC ) 1968. Under this name, it was transformed in 1976 into a public company ( Etablissement Public Industriel et Commercial à caractère, EPIC). Infrastructure and production

The SONABEL operates 29 thermal and four hydroelectric plants with a total capacity of 223 megawatts. In 2006, the SONABEL sold 580'537 Megawatt hours ( MWh) of electricity. The production is not enough at peak times from to meet the electricity demand. 2006 imported Burkina Faso approximately 140,000 MWh.
