The Japanese Mövchen is a domesticated form of the pointed tail - bronze male ( Lonchura striata ).

It has not its origin, as the name suggests, in Japan, but in China. There was bred in the 15th or 16th century, from the sharp-tailed bronze male. The starting point was probably the subspecies occurring in China Lonchura striata swinhoei. 1705 came the first Mövchen to Japan and were bred there and exported. Thus they arrived in the 1860s to Europe and took their name from Japanese Mövchen. The first known color varieties were the whites and Pied. The first white birds were already shown in 1860 at the London Zoo. Haubenmövchen came about in 1930 in appearance. 1948 were distinguished in Japan already forty different Variatäten.

In the 1950s and 1960s there have been attempts to breed by crossbreeding with other Bronze Figure kinds of new color varieties. Breeder name as the Danes af Enehjelm and Langberg, but later the Germans Radtke and Kirschke are inextricably connected. Example, it was trying to pull by crossing with Borneo Bronze male dark Mövchen. The various hybridization experiments have led to the so-called " Schaumövchen ".

There are at Mövchen the primary colors Schwarz-/Dunkelbraun, nougat and fox red. There are also white, Pied and Dun. When mutations occur in the basic colors of the pastel and the gray factor in appearance. The latest mutation is the Perlmutation in gray and brown.
