Society for Social Studies of Science

The Society for Social Studies of Science ( 4S ) is a scientific association for the study of science and technology. It was founded in 1975 and 2008 had more than 1,200 international members. President since 2010 is Judy Wajcman.

Its first president was the American sociologist Robert K. Merton. She is currently based at the Department of Sociology at Louisiana State University. 4S is a quarterly scientific journal Science, Technology, & Human Values ​​out and organizing an annual conference with hundreds of participants from areas like science and technology studies, sociology of science, science studies, history of science, philosophy of science, scientific anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, and science educators.

4S has awarded the annual Ludwik Fleck Prize for the best book in the field of science and technology research; the Rachel Carson Prize for a work of social or political relevance; John Desmond Bernal the Award for outstanding contributions, as well as the Nicholas C. Mullins Prize for outstanding graduate students.
