Socket 754

The base 754 is a processor socket for AMD processors, the AMD Athlon 64 and AMD Sempron series as well as the mobile processors, AMD Turion 64 and AMD Sempron Mobile.

The base 754 is a precursor to the Socket 939 dar. It is a designed to lower production costs modification of the base 940, which was the Athlon 64 FX and Opteron reserved. Socket 754 motherboards support as opposed to Socket 940 motherboards:

  • Single-channel memory interface instead of two-channel (dual-channel )
  • No memory in Registered version

Since this motherboard are only required with 4-layer PCB (instead of 6 layers ), these can be produced even cheaper.

The base also represents the successor to Socket A and Socket was the standard for entry-level and mid-range PC for AMD processors. For high-end PCs, workstations and servers from AMD Socket 939 and Socket 940 were provided.

Socket 754 was, in contrast to the base 939, still in production until the end of 2007 for the mainstream and notebook range. Socket 939 was almost completely replaced in late 2006 by the new socket AM2. The successor to the socket 754 in the mobile space is the socket S1, which was launched in the second quarter of 2006.
