Socket AM3

The socket AM3 processor socket is a company AMD. It was introduced in early February 2009 and is the direct successor of the AM2 socket. The biggest change here is the transition from DDR2 to DDR3 memory: While AM2 and AM2 CPUs include a dual-channel DDR2 memory controller and the base must provide appropriate pins for the links, this memory bus, the socket is AM3 for dual-channel connection of DDR3 memory designed. Therefore AM3 CPUs have a DDR3 memory controller. So far have AM3 CPUs in addition also a DDR2 memory controller, which allows them to run on older AM2/AM2 motherboards after a BIOS update. Older AM2/AM2 processors, including those from the first Phenom series with Toliman and Agena cores, but are able to run because of the missing or non-enabled DDR3 memory controller, not on AM3 motherboards.

The Phenom used on the socket AM3 II, Athlon II and Sempron 1xx CPUs have not the 941 contacts as the base itself, but only 938 pins.

Socket AM3

AM3 is a modification of the AM3 socket, which is required for AMD FX-Series processors. All AM3 processors will work in an AM3 motherboard, conversely, is limited to the case. While some motherboard manufacturers support this (after a BIOS update ), it is not recommended by AMD.

Differences between AM3 and AM3 :

  • The AM3 socket is white, the black AM3 socket
  • The holes in the AM3 sockets are larger ( 0.51 mm instead of 0.45 mm). This will better prevent the CPU does not fit in the socket or bend when inserting pins.
