Socorro County is a county located in the state of New Mexico in the United States. Here live 17 866 inhabitants. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Socorro.
Geography
The county has an area of 17,220 square kilometers; which includes 6 square kilometers of water. The county borders in New Mexico in a clockwise direction to the counties: Cibola County, Valencia County, Torrance County, Lincoln County, Sierra County and Catron County.

According to the census of 2000, there were 18,078 people in the county. There were 6,675 households and 4,492 families. The population density was 1 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.87 % White, 0.64 % African American, 10.92 % Native American, 1.14 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 20.10% from other races groups; 4.28% were descended from two or more races. 48.73 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,675 households out of which 33.80 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.40 % were married couples living together, 13.30% had a female householder with no husband. 32.70 % were non-families. 26.80 % of all households and 8.20% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.20 persons.
