Socratea exorrhiza ( syn.. Iriartea exorrhiza Mart ) is a plant which belongs to the palm family ( Arecaceae ).

Occurrence

The home of Socratea exorrhiza extends from Central America (countries Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama) to the Amazon Basin in South America.

This plant was introduced among other things, Mauritius.

Description

Socratea exorrhiza is up to 2 m high stilt roots and can reach heights of growth of 20 m. The palm fronds are up to 2 feet long and form on a blue-green crown shaft. It is monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). The threefold flowers are white. Forming drupes having diameters of 2 to 3 cm.

Ecology

" Ongoing palm" or " walking palm" call the " Ticos " in Costa Rica this species is said to have your property to be able to change their location in order to contact, for example, from the shade of larger trees. This has, however, now recognized as false.

Economic Importance

The palm heart more bitter taste and eaten earlier by the locals.

Conservation

Socratea exorrhiza is now one of Costa Rica's ' no cut' list.
