Socrates programme

The Socrates program (now replaced by the Lifelong Learning Programme ) was an action program of the European Union to promote transnational cooperation in education.

History

The second phase of the program began on 1 January 2000 and ran until 31 December 2006. They continued the promotion of European cooperation in education the first phase ( 1995-1999) continued and had a total budget of 1.85 billion euros. Since 2007, the education program Socrates was replaced by the new EU Lifelong Learning Programme ( LLLP ). The EU granted until 2013 nearly seven billion euros for this new program.

Construction

The program was open to all institutions in the field of education from preschool to adult education and included eight areas of action:

  • " Comenius ": Promotes school partnerships, the education and training of school personnel, and networks for school partnerships.
  • " Erasmus ": Represents the basis for European co-operation of universities and primarily promotes the mobility of students and faculty (eg, through scholarships and information) and the establishment of thematic networks.
  • " Grundtvig ": Supports European cooperation projects and learning partnerships, as well as mobility for training of teachers of adult education and the establishment of contact networks.
  • " Lingua ": Promotes through the training of teachers and various projects to language learning and the development of tools and materials for language teaching
  • " MINERVA ": Explored new methods of open and distance learning, and the possibilities for the use of information and communication technologies in education.
  • " Observation and innovation ": Aimed at improving the quality and transparency of education systems, promote the innovation process in European education through information and experience as well as performing comparative analyzes of European education systems and policies.
  • 'Joint Action': Promotes actions that complement the already mentioned programs and interlink.
  • " Accompanying measures ": the definition of " marketing " to European action programs and the promotion of programs at the local level ( through material and information).

At the Socrates program currently 31 countries are represented:

  • The 27 States of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, United Kingdom, Cyprus.
  • Three of the four EFTA countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, but not Switzerland.
  • Turkey as a candidate country of the EU.
