The Sodenberg, Saaletal with Untereschenbach and Diebach

The Sodenberg ( 481.3 m above sea level. NN, formerly Schottenberg or Kiliansberg ) is a basalt cone on the banks of the Franconian Saale on the territory of the city of mutton castle among the towns Ochsenthal and Weikersgrüben. It forms the border between the forested Südrhön and the Franconian hills. The mountain and its surroundings are located in the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park.

As a special feature the now abandoned quarry can be seen. In the first half of the 20th century, the basalt was promoted from the volcanic vent, so now in the surrounding limestone is included with a crater about 150 meters in diameter, which corresponds approximately to the Magmapfropfen. The original form of the mountain have, compensated according to ancient tradition, a sleeping lion, the head of the lion is gone today. Starting from Good Sodenberg is a walking path around the mountain, which passes the crater and the former quarry site. On the way relics of the quarry devices such as a tunnel and ruins can be seen. From the site of the former quarry a wide view opens to the north on the Saale, and Rhön with their basalt formation.
