Sodium butyrate is a white hygroscopic salt of butyric acid. It has an unpleasant odor, and is stable against light and heat.
Synthesis
Sodium butyrate, can be prepared by salt-forming reaction of sodium hydroxide and butyric acid.
Use
Sodium butyrate is used as an additive for animal feed use. It is used in medicine as a nutrient for intestinal cells, and accelerates the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa. Furthermore, it affects the growth of cancer cells and is available under the name Sobutir ®. Studies have shown that sodium butyrate could possibly be suitable for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy. Prophylaxis of radiogenic proctitis it was registered by the European Commission under the number EU/3/05/284 in the Community Register of Orphan Medicinal Products.
