Sodium is the sodium salt of phenol. It is produced by the reaction of phenol with sodium hydroxide.
Use
Sodium is used for the preparation of salicylic acid by Kolbe-Schmitt reaction. For this purpose, it is heated with carbon dioxide under pressure and converted the resulting sodium salicylate with sulfuric acid:
