Sody's tree-rat

The Sody Tree Rat ( Kadarsanomys sodyi ) is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ).

Sody tree rats reach a body length 18-21 centimeters, of that there is a 26 to 31 centimeters long tail. Their fur is gray brown on the top, the center is slightly darker than the flanks, the underside is white. The tail, which is longer than the body, is covered with light brown and shed.

These rodents live just to the west of the Indonesian island of Java, all specimens have been discovered so far in bamboo -covered forests. They gnaw holes with three to four inches in diameter in the bamboo stalks and there on their nests. Otherwise, nothing is known about their way of life.

All known specimens were found in the 1930s, since there was no sighting of this kind more. Due to the small distribution area, the IUCN lists the Sody tree rat as "endangered" ( vulnerable ).
