Soest, Netherlands

( Listen? / I ) Soest [ sust ] is a municipality in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Soest ( NL) is twinned with Soest in Westphalia, Germany.

The municipality is not only the main town of Soest, but also the village of Soesterberg and located in the forest villa estate Soestduinen. The village Soestdijk is partly owned to Soest. However, the palace Soestdijk where the Dutch Queen Juliana lived with her husband Bernhard of Lippe - Biesterfeld lies within the territory of the neighboring municipality of Baarn.

Location

Soest is situated 20 km northeast of the city of Utrecht and 7 km west of Amersfoort. These cities can be reached from here by train or by car on good roads. Soest is located on the border of sandy woodlands " Utrecht Ridge " and the polders of the river Eem (see Amersfoort ).

History

Soest originated in the Middle Ages as a farming village to a "narrow" ( = green or common land). Of these, the village church, built in 1400 has been preserved. The beautiful location made ​​it after 1870 became a popular residence for (initially only wealthy ) commuters.
