Sofiyivka Raion

The Rajon Sofijiwka (Ukrainian Софіївський район; Russian Софиевский район / Sofijewski rayon ) is an administrative unit, founded in 1923 within the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in central Ukraine. The Rajon has an area of 1,364 km ² and a population of about 22,800 inhabitants ( December 2012). The population density is 17 inhabitants per km ².

The administrative seat and largest town of the Rajons is the urban-type settlement Sofijiwka. The village is located 90 km southwest of Oblasthauptstadt Dnipropetrovsk and 43 km north-east of the center of Krivoy Rog.

Geography

The Rajon lies in the west of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and is bordered to the north by Rajon Pjatychatky, in the northeast on the Rajon Krynytschky, to the east by Rajon Solon, on the southeast by the Rajon Nikopol on the south by Rajon Apostolowe and to the west by Rajon Krywyj Rih.

The largest river of the region is the Basawluk, a tributary of the Dnieper. Another river is the Saksahan that is accumulated in the north of the Rajons for over 13 m² Makorty Reservoir and flows in Krivoy Rog in the Inhulez. The third major river in the region is the Kamianka, a 88 km long tributary of the Basawluk.
