Sofiyivsky Park

The National Park dendrological " Sofijiwka " ( Ukrainian: Національний дендрологічний парк " Софіївка » / Nazionalnyj dendrolohitschnyj park " Sofijiwka " ) is a 1.79 km ² large park in the north of Uman, Ukraine. Sofijiwka is a landscape garden with over 2,000 species of native and exotic plants.

History

The Sofijiwka Park was created in 1796 by the Polish magnate Stanisław Potocki ( 1753-1805 ), and his wife, Sofia Witt - Potocki ( 1760-1822 ) named. He gave Sofijiwka his wife in May 1802 her name. The Polish military engineer Ludwig Metzel was the architect of the topographical and architectural design of the park and directed the construction work. Sofijiwka was created in the forest-free area next to the river Kamianka. Unevenness of the area were used on a clever, but not pre-planned way for the park construction. After the Polish November Uprising, the park was seized and donated by Czar Nicholas I, whose wife Alexandra Fyodorovna. Since then, the park " Tsaritsyn Sad " was called ( Garden of the Empress ). In the times of the Soviet Union, the park got its old name back and was declared a nature reserve.

Attractions in the park

Sofijiwka was planned as an illustration of the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer. Additional portions of the park were expanded thematically selected compositions of trees, landscape elements and architecture. The topics are for example: English Garden, Champs -Elysees, Little Switzerland, Lake Geneva, Caucasian mountain. The park is decorated with ancient statues. There are several artificial ponds, mountains, waterfalls, fountains and a 224 meter long underground river. 2007 Sofijiwka was voted one of the seven wonders of Ukraine. Sofijiwka is annually visited by 500 thousand tourists. In 1985 the minor planet number was named in 2259 after the park Sofijiwka.
