Soft iron

Soft iron is a soft magnetic material and consists of unalloyed iron. Previously contained in particular electrical machinery (electric motor, generator and transformer ) Soft iron plates for bundling the required magnetic fields. Today, it most dynamo sheet ( iron-based alloys) is employed. Soft magnetic sheets are always used when a temporary magnetization by an external magnetic field is not to lead to a permanent magnetization. This is for example also in moving iron works of the case.

Soft iron, or more, the highly permeable mu-metal can also be used for magnetic shielding. Also in some watches the movement is protected by a covering of soft iron from magnetic fields.

The material is also used as pellet use.

A significant soft iron foundry in Austria was M. Hann 's sons in Rainfeld.
