Softex

Athenian Paper Mills Softex, known under the brand name Softex, is a manufacturer of paper and toiletries. The once independent company from Athens today belongs to the Bolton Group.

History

The company was founded in 1937 in Athens and Athenian Paper Mills and was long the market leader in Greece. Nevertheless, it was deficient and was partly nationalized in 1984 along with other loss-making companies. Sales had fallen by the end of the 1990s to 22 million euros, at 1275 employees. After a successful rehabilitation and closure of the plant in Drama with 200 employees, the company was sold to the Bolton Group. The market share of the brand in Greece has recovered to 2003 to 19.3 % to 27.2 %, 50 % of the paper produced are usually sold for further processing to other companies abroad.
