A software development environment is a collection of numerous hardware, software, applications and documentation that will be provided to the software developers to create an application.

In the simplest case, only a compiler or Software Development Kit ( SDK) is provided. Today's system include, however, depending on the task purpose usually much more components. While for an operating system development usually beginning with only a toolchain can be provided, has a medium-sized project of application software at least one integrated development environment ( IDE ), a source control software, including associated servers, network, development, test and reference systems, at least one SDK documentation and if possible also an Internet connection. Here, this list may not be complete or be used in any project in this form.
