The University of Sohar (Arabic: جامعة صحار, DMG Ǧāmi ʿ at Sohar, Sohar English University) is a private university in Sohar in the north of the Sultanate of Oman.

History

The predecessor institution of the University of Sohar was founded in 1998 Sohar College of Applied Sciences. At that time was the foreign academic partners, the University of Lincolnshire & Humberside.

Sultan Qaboos issued Royal Decree 1999 41/99, which allowed the establishment of private universities in Oman. The government supports the establishment of a number of measures: tax exemption for five years; Free land, capital aid up to 50 % of the equity (maximum 3 million Omani Rial; then € 6 million ), and State grants for students from low income families. The government is trying the quality of teaching by the mandatory cooperation with a recognized foreign university and the mandatory accreditation to the Oman Accreditation Council ( OAC ) to ensure.

Subsequently, the university was founded on 11 September 2001 by a ministerial order as the first private university in the country. Academic Structure

The university has four faculties: Engineering Sciences, Applied Sciences, Business Administration and Social Sciences. On it you can complete the following programs: a university preparation program (English Foundation program), the "Bachelor ", the " Diploma " and the " Advanced Diploma ".

Student numbers

In the academic year 2006/ 07 a total of 2,167 students were studying at the university. These were 26.8 % more than last year.
