Sokol, Vologda Oblast

Sokol (Russian Сокол ) is a city in North-West Russia. It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 38 452 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city lies on the Sukhona, the left source river of the Northern Dvina River, about 35 km north of the Oblasthauptstadt Vologda. The nearest town is Kadnikow, 12 km east of Sokol.

Sokol is the Oblast administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The town was first mentioned as a village Sokolowo 1615. With the establishment of a village after Sokol ( Russian word for falcon) named paper mill in 1897, a workers' settlement of the same name, which received city rights in 1932 and was the third largest city of the oblast was formed.

In the city the POW camp consisted of 193 German prisoners of war of World War II. Assigned to the camp was the POW Hospital in 3732 140 km north lying Woschega.
