Solar Decathlon Europe
The Solar Decathlon Europe is a technical and interdisciplinary competition in which teams of students from around the world to design and build a house whose energy demand is met solely by solar energy.
Europe stands for the venue and restricts the origin of participants not on the European continent. The two previously discharged competitions were held here each in Madrid (Spain). Taking place in 2014 Solar Decathlon Europe will take place for the first time in Versailles ( France).
The offshoot of the American Solar Decathlon was first awarded by the Spanish Government, together with the Spanish Ministry of Construction and the Polytechnic University of Madrid in the summer of 2008. For this purpose, a bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Spanish governments have been taken. A similar agreement also established the Solar Decathlon China, to be held in 2013 for the first time.

Participation
Participation is open to teams of students each university or college in the world. The Spanish government, however, the Israeli Ariel University excluded from SDE 2010, because this " in occupied territories " is. On the basis of an application which must be submitted in advance of the competition, each team, the organizer makes a preselection, with the number of participants is limited. In addition to the architectural and energy technical planning of the house the organization and financing of the project are a major competitive component. The student teams are two years available for the planning and implementation of the construction project. The contest ends with a two-week meeting of all participants, in which the teams compete against each other or their homes in ten disciplines.
Assessment
The name derives it from Decathlon of 10 sub-disciplines within the competition. The prototypes will be evaluated not only in terms of energy efficiency and the innovative handling of active solar energy technology but also in terms of quality of living and sustainable development for the construction industry. Add to that also the excited by the respective teams public interest will be assessed on energy-efficient and sustainable building.

In addition to the awards in the sub-disciplines were part of the overall event in 2012, special prices outside of the actual competition - eg for a particular disabled unconverted house - forgive.

The third Solar Decathlon Europe will take place in June / July 2014 held in Versailles ( France).

SDE 2012
The second Solar Decathlon Europe took place in September 2012 again held in Madrid. With about 220,000 visitors, the public interest in the competition has increased, although the exhibition area was less central in Madrid compared to the competition in 2010.

SDE 2010
The Solar Decathlon Europe 2010 took place from June 18 to 28 in Madrid. In total, over 190,000 people attended the competition site in the center of Madrid.
