Coleus ( Solenostemon scutellarioides )

The Coleus ( Solenostemon Scutellarioides Syn Plectranthus scutellarioides, formerly Coleus blumeii ) is a plant from the mint family ( Lamiaceae).

Features

The Coleus is a perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches the plant height of 30 to 80 centimeters. The leaves are herbaceous. The upper sepals are erect and broadly ovate. The lateral sepals are shorter than the upper, ovate, semi-circular and blunt. The lateral sepals are narrowly triangular. The corolla tube is kneeling. The Kronoberlippe two to vierlappig. The Kronunterlippe is boat-shaped.

The flowering period extends from June to October.

Dissemination

The species is found on river banks, in fields and forests in Southeast Asia.

Use

The Coleus is used as a houseplant and scattered as an ornamental plant for summer discounts. It is in culture at least since 1851. The species is grown as an annual. There are numerous varieties whose leaves are red, yellow, green and brown painted.
