Soli, Cilicia

Soli ( Latin form: solo, later Pompeiopolis ) was a port city in Cilicia, at today's Viranşehir, a district of the Turkish city of Mersin.

Soli, which is first mentioned by Xenophon, was allegedly founded by Greek colonists from Argos and Lindos on Rhodes. The residents were at the time of Alexander the Great but faithful to the Achaemenids. Alexander, who arrived in the city in October 333 BC, so a crew was laid back and Soloi a tribute of 200 talents on. The city had to give hostages, and was intended for destruction, a command that Alexander but withdrew again. In Soloi Alexander held a celebration of his recovery after almost fateful bath in Cydnus and sacrificed to Asclepius.

After Soli was destroyed BC 83 by Tigranes II, it was re-founded as Pompeiopolis by Pompey, and settled with the survivors of the pirate war. In late antiquity was Pompeiopolis seat of a bishop.

Only a few remains of the ancient Soloi have been preserved, including the harbor and pillars of a colonnaded street. An early 19th century seen from our community theater is no longer visible.
