Solis Viaduct

The Solis Viaduct is a railway bridge east of the village of Solis in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is part of the railway line from Thusis to Filisur the Rhaetian Railway.

Construction

The river Albula spanning bridge is 89 m high and 164 m long. It consists of a main arch with a span of 42 m and ten side sheets 8-10 m. It is the highest bridge in the RhB.

History

The Solis viaduct was calculated by engineer Hans Studer as the first stone arch bridge in Switzerland according to the theory of elasticity. This allowed for the parabolic arch and thus particularly slim to construct. Was built the bridge in 1902 by the company Munari, Cayre and Marasi; the construction costs amounted to 125,000 francs.

1997 Solis viaduct was renovated at great expense. The insulation between the roadbed and masonry was replaced by a new seal with liquid -applied plastic film and shotcrete was installed. In addition, the track and the gravel trough were renewed.
