Isopropylideneglycerol, also Solketal is a chemical compound from the group of the acetonide and the dioxolanes. The derivative of glycerol with an isopropylidene protecting group is liquid at room temperature.

Production

Solketal is produced synthetically from glycerol and acetone in the presence of acids.

Stereochemistry

Isopropylidene has a chiral center and there are therefore two separate and enantiomeric compounds (R ) - and ( S)- solketal.

Chemical Properties

The isopropylidene group is regarded as so-called protective group for two hydroxyl groups, thereby at the third, still free hydroxy group, held a selective reaction. Later, you can eliminate the protecting group under acidic again and gets back the two hydroxy groups.

Use

Isopropylidene glycerol is used as synthetic building block in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
