Solomon Burke

Solomon Burke ( born March 21, 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † October 10, 2010 in Haarlemmermeer, Netherlands) was an American soul and rhythm-and - blues singer who witnessed the peak of his popularity in the 1960s and as a composer of hits like Everybody Needs Somebody to Love worked.

Biography

The oldest of seven children began very early to sing in the church choir his grandmother and preached already nine years ago, the local community, where he was known as " Wonder Boy Preacher". At twelve, he traveled all around Philadelphia and performed as a gospel singer. 1954 Burke got from his grandmother for Christmas a guitar as a present. As a result, he enlisted in 1955 with his band, the Cavaliers, a talent show at. There, the wife of a famous radio DJ on Burke was attentive and gave him in December 1955 a contract with Apollo Records in New York City, where he recorded both sacred and secular music.

The plates flopped throughout all, and Apollo could not pay Burke, so he soon returned to Philadelphia, where he led the funeral of an aunt some time. After a few also not successful recordings with Singular Records Burke finally got in 1960 a contract with Atlantic Records. With the country hit Just Out of Reach, he came in September 1961 for the first time in the U.S. charts. Between the recording date 6 December 1961 and the recording session on August 28, 1964 Bert Berns served as producer for Burke. During this period, published by Atlantic Records a total of 13 singles, including If You Need Me, which penetrated up to # 2 on the R & B charts or the fast-paced Everybody Needs Somebody to Love. Ironically, the next single without the producer Berns, namely, published in February 1965 Got to Get You Off My Mind, with a # 1 Largest in the R & B charts Burke hit. By 1969 Burke was able to place various songs to the hit parade, including another No. 2 R & B placement Tonight's the Night. Burke influenced singers like Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart and Tom Jones. In 1965, he toured Europe for the first time through, and his concerts were often very well attended.

After seven years at Atlantic in 1969 Burke moved to Bell Records. This began a label change in 1970 /71, which were successes but noticeably. 1972 Burke finally disappeared from the charts. In 1975, he left after a final release on Chess Records, first the music business completely. Only nine years later, he returned to the music scene. He toured North America and Europe had still many fans still reaped its publications no notable successes more.

After the 1987 album Love Trap earned miserable reviews, Burke moved again back to his community and initially no longer published. He built his own funeral home on, has 21 children and was eventually great-grandfather. In 1992, he came up with the idea to take a blues album and signing with Black Top Records. Appeared in 1993, the album Soul of the Blues, which got excellent reviews. In the same year he received a Pioneer Award from the R & B Foundation. For his album Live at the House of Blues was 1994 W. C. Handy Award - added. 1996 Burke's biography of George Nierenberg was filmed as Sweet Inspiration and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2003 he received the Living Blues Award for Best Live Performer and Most Outstanding Blues Singer.

In 2002 he published the produced by Joe Henry album Do not Give Up on Me, which was published in " Fat Possum Records ". The songs came from, inter alia, Van Morrison, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Joe Henry and Nick Lowe.

Like a Fire called his album of 2008, Shout! / Soulfood. The songs came, inter alia, by Eric Clapton. The album devoted his deceased daughter Michelle Burke. In 2010 he published on E1 nor the album Nothing 's Impossible, in 2011, received the Blues Blues Music Award for Best Soul Album. Burke personally Award this year for Best Soul Blues Artist.

On 10 October 2010 he died at 70 years, probably due to a heart attack on a plane, shortly after the plane has landed in Los Angeles at the airport of Amsterdam. He is survived by 21 children and 90 grandchildren.
