Solomon Joseph Solomon

Solomon Joseph Solomon ( born September 16, 1860 in London, † July 27, 1927 in Birchington -on-Sea, Kent ) was an English painter.

Life

Solomon came from a long-established family. His sister Lilly was also known as a painter; the writer Moss Hart was his nephew.

Solomon studied at several schools and academies: Heatherley School of Fine Art, Royal Academy of Arts ( RA), Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the École des Beaux -Arts (EBA). Through his teacher at the EBA - especially Alexandre Cabanel - he was invited from the spring of 1881 regular major exhibitions of the Salon de Paris.

In 1896, the RA him as " associate " and ten years later they offered him membership, which he accepted also. 1886 Solomon was instrumental in the founding of the New English Art Club. 1919 appointed him to the Royal Society of British Artists as its president and Solomon held this office for several years held.

Reception

Solomon is one of the Pre-Raphaelites. By his own admission, he was influenced by Alexandre Cabanel, Frederick Leighton and Lawrence Alma- Tadema.

While at the beginning of his artistic activity yet historically inspired motifs, he had made no later than 1894 with a portrait of the actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell known as a portraitist.
