Solomon Steinheim

Salomon Ludwig Steinheim (pseudonym: Abadjah Ben Amos ) ( born August 6 1789 in Bruchhausen, † May 19 1866 in Zurich ) was a Jewish physician, philosopher of religion and scholar.

Life

1807 Steinheim began to study medicine and graduated in 1811 in Kiel for Dr. med Initially he was from 1813 doctor in Steinheim, near his birthplace, then physician in Altona (then Danish, today a part of Hamburg) until 1845, after which he traveled. Since 1833, he pursued philosophical and theological studies. He lived for some time in Rome in 1854, traveled to Copenhagen and in 1865 and 1866, according to Zurich. On this last trip, he died and was buried in the Reformed cemetery. Altona friends were still 1866 lead to the place of his long ministry his body.

As a writer, Steinheim fought for the emancipation of the Jews in the ( Danish ) Schleswig and Holstein. His main theological works is The Revelation after the doctrinal system of the synagogue, written 1835 until 1865. He was an independent thinker who can not be fit into the scheme of traditional Jewish orthodoxy or reform movement.

According to him, the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute is named at the University of Duisburg-Essen, exploring the German -Jewish history. The name emphasizes that he is a forgotten wrongly philosopher of the 19th century.
