Somali parliamentary election, 1979

Parliamentary elections were held in Somalia on December 30, 1979.

It was the first since the general election in Somalia in 1969 and the first, which were held under the new constitution after it was adopted in constitutional referendum in August 1979. Since then, Somalia could be regarded as a socialist one-party state.

As a result, the Somali Revolutionary Socialist Party was the only party which was allowed to participate in the election. The voters were simply asked whether they vote for or against the nominee. If the candidate was rejected by a majority, a new candidate has been nominated.

Officially voted 99.91 percent of the voters for the proposed candidates and the party occupied all 171 seats in the People's Assembly. The assembly elected as President of Somalia Siad Barre, who in turn appointed six members of the Assembly.
