Somaschi Fathers

The Somaschi are members of a religious order within the Roman Catholic Church ( Latin: Ordo Clericorum Regularium a Somascha, religious symbol: CRS). They are also called Society of the Servants of the poor and were founded in 1528.

History

The Order was founded in 1528 by the Venetian lay Aemiliani Hieronymus ( 1486-1537 ) in the vicinity of Milan and in 1540 by Pope Paul III. (1534-1549) confirmed as a community of regular clerics. Its name from the congregation of the village Somasca in Milan, where the Mother House of the Order is and what is the place of death of the later canonized religious founders. In the 19th century saw the order to which lay people can belong, in its heyday. Likewise, were founded at this time in America monasteries. 1680, the female branch, the Somaskerinnen was founded in Genoa, which also operate in the education and care of orphans.

Rule and life -

The Somaschi live according to the Augustine rule and devote themselves mainly of education, especially orphans. At the time the Order has about 500 members. They work in boarding schools, orphanages, poor and hospitals. Widespread they are mainly in Italy but also in North, Central and South America. The Superior General has his headquarters in Rome.
