Sombacour

Sombacour is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Sombacour is located on 749 m above sea level, about nine miles northwest of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on the southern edge of the high plateau of Val d' Usiers, at the foot of the height of the Bois des Raffours and at the entrance to the gorge of the Col des Roches.

The area of ​​19:30 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The central part of the area is occupied by the plateau of the Val d' Usiers with the trough of Sombacour, which is on average 730 m. To the west the plateau increases slightly, and the church floor extends into the vast forest areas of the Bois de Byans ( to 840 m) and Bois du Pessoul. In between is the dry valley of Combe d' Orgeval. Southeast of Sombacour passed via a 100 m high ground level to the high plateau of La Vrine. The slope is crowned at different locations of limestone cliffs and is only interrupted by the Klus of Col des Roches. With 907 m is reached on the plateau of La Vrine the highest elevation of Sombacour. The entire area has no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground.

Neighboring communities of Sombacour are Évillers and Goux -les- Usiers in the north, Dommartin in the east, and Houtaud Chaffois in the south and Chapelle- d'Huin and Septfontaines in the West.

History

The place name derives Sombacour summary of the Latin words curtis ( highest court ) ago. Since the 13th century Sombacour was central to the rule Usier whose castle was on the ledge above the village. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Attractions

The village church of Saint- Gervais -Saint- Protais was built from 1493 in the Gothic style. The Calvary with Stations of the Cross stations was built from 1895 to 1956. From the former medieval castle Usiers ruins remain.

Population

With 605 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Sombacour one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century (1901 564 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Sombacour was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by agriculture, especially dairy farming and animal husbandry, and forestry village.
