Somerset County (Maine)
Somerset County is a county located in the state of Maine in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Skowhegan.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 10,607 square kilometers. Of these, 319 square kilometers, according to 4.12 percent, water areas.

History
Somerset County was formed on March 1, 1809 from parts of Kennebec County, and named after the English county of Somerset.
Traffic
In the far south the county is affected by Interstate 95. Most important north-south connection is U.S. Highway 201 in the north has the border crossing Armstrong - Jackman Border Crossing to Canada. In the south of the county of the U.S. Highway 2, which crosses the other highway in the county town of Skowhegan runs.

According to the census of 2000, there were 50 888 people in the county. There were 20 496 households, and 14,121 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.00 % White, 0.24 % African American, 0.41 % Native American, 0.34 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 0.11 % from other races groups; 0.89% were descended from two or more races. 0.46 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 20 496 households out of which 31.60 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.20 % were married couples living together, 10.10% had a female householder with no husband. 31.10 % were non-families. 24.60 % of all households and 10.20% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.87.
Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.70 % under the age of 18, 7.00 % from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44 years, 25.30 % between 45 and 64 years and 14.30 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.00 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.30 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,731, and the median income for a family was $ 36,464. Males have a median income of $ 29,032, women $ 20,745. The per capita income was $ 15,474. 14.90% of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. 19.40% of those under age 18 and 12.50% were 65 years or older.
