Somerset East

Province

Somerset East ( Afrikaans Somerset - Oos ) is a town in the Blue Crane Route Municipality, Cacadu District, Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. It is located 180 kilometers from Port Elizabeth. The city is also the seat of local government. In 2011 she had, along with the Township KwaNojoli, 18,825 inhabitants.

The first settlement under the name of Somerset was held here in 1815 to produce feed for the horses of the British cavalry. The present city itself was founded in 1825 by Lord Charles Henry Somerset; City rights it has got 1837. To avoid confusion with Somerset West, the additional East was named later added.

  • Somerset East Museum Shortly after the city was founded the Wesleyan missionaries a piece of land was allocated for the construction of a chapel and a cemetery. Shortly after the completion of the chapel in 1828 went over the chapel and the associated property in the possession of the Dutch Reformed Church. 1835, the chapel was to the rectory. The building will be 1975 for the 150th anniversary of the city to the museum.
